A LIFE THAT FEELS LIKE YOU
You do not have to choose just one today.
A meal with family in Japan. An unhurried morning in Malaysia. If both matter to you, begin with the shape of a year. Put the dates you want to be away and the moments you want to be home on the same calendar.
ONE YEAR. TWO PLACES.
Let your year reveal the practical questions.
A preparation note for your year
Family occasions, routine care, important dates
Location, home, everyday routines
What would your year look like?
Start with the dates that matter at home
Begin with family occasions, routine medical visits and matters you want to handle in Japan. Add your preferred Malaysia stays, then review how the pattern fits residency requirements.
Plan for the home you leave behind
Review vacant-home arrangements, post, payments and contract periods in both countries. Include travel and overlapping running costs in your annual view. Property availability and management services require separate confirmation.
Separate immigration and tax questions
A long-term pass does not by itself determine tax residence. Review your home, family, assets and income with advisers for the relevant countries. Days abroad alone do not establish tax savings or non-resident treatment.
YOUR WISHES. A CLEARER NEXT STEP.
Start with the year you have in mind.
When would you stay, for how long, and with whom? Discuss Bona’s Japanese-language support scope for residency, housing and coordination. Legal and tax decisions belong to qualified advisers, including your existing team; clarify responsibilities and sequence.

YOUR QUESTIONS, IN EVERYDAY TERMS
From a question to a next step.
Keep family moments in your plan
Start with family occasions, how often you want to meet and the travel burden. Use those dates to compare Malaysia stays, housing contracts and running costs in both countries. Consider time abroad and time with family as parts of one plan.
When family in Japan needs you
Identify regular return dates, family communication and who decides when plans change. Check how that fits residency conditions before choosing a duration and home. Discuss a stay that accounts for family responsibilities; care services and urgent travel arrangements are not promised.
QUESTIONS BEFORE YOUR FIRST STEP
Questions before your next step.
Can I live in Malaysia for only part of the year?
It is an option to explore, subject to a suitable pass and its conditions. Check required presence and renewal terms for MM2H or other routes. Repeated short visits should not be assumed to replace long-term permission.
Does spending more time abroad make me a Japanese tax non-resident?
Days abroad alone do not decide the issue. Japan’s National Tax Agency describes residence categories based on address and residence, among other conditions. Seek advice on both countries and any applicable tax treaty.
Will international medical insurance cover visits to Japan?
It depends on the product, coverage area, duration and purpose of care. Check routine visits, emergencies and continuing treatment separately with the insurer and policy wording. Acceptance and payment are not guaranteed.
Can I keep my existing advisers in Japan?
Yes. Discuss local questions and coordination while retaining your existing legal and tax advisers. Information sharing requires your authorisation; confirm the specific scope and fees individually.
